Dec. 23 (UPI) -- Syfy has canceled its zombie-apocalypse drama Z Nation after five seasons.

"How could we be sad when we were given so much? We were so grateful for every season Syfy said yes. Plus we have a spin off with @Netflix that u will LOVE. It's an embarrassment of riches. Now excuse me while I cry in my pillow (off camera)," producer David Michael Latt tweeted Saturday.

Starring Kellita Smith, Keith Allan, DJ Qualls, Mario Van Peebles and Lydia Hearst, the series is to wrap up with a finale on Friday.

Deadline.com said Netflix has ordered eight episodes of the Z Nation companion series Black Summer, which will focus on a mother searching for her daughter.
