Dec. 21 (UPI) -- Johnny Weir and Will Kemp are joining a new Netflix series about figure-skating.

The streaming site announced Thursday the 34-year-old former Olympic figure skater and 41-year-old actor will star in the upcoming drama Spinning Out.

Spinning Out centers on Kat (Kaya Scodelario), an up-and-coming skater who turns to pairs skating after a fall ends her singles career. She partners with Justin (Evan Roderick), a talented bad boy.

Weir will play Gabe, a funny and seemingly easy-going guy who proves a cutthroat competitor for Kat and Justin. Kemp will portray Mitch, a charming "it coach" who works with Kat's sister, Serena (Willow Shields).

"Obsessed with the fact that @JohnnyGWeir will co-star in our new ice skating series as a cutthroat competitor who will stop at nothing to win! #SpinningOut," Netflix tweeted on its See What's Next account.

Sarah Wright Olsen will also star as Mandy, Justin's stepmother, with Kaitlyn Leeb as Leah, Gabe's skating partner, Amanda Zhou as Jenn, Kat's best friend, and Mitchell Edwards as Marcus, Kat's co-worker.

Weir, a two-time Olympian, confirmed his casting in a post Thursday on Twitter.

"Actressing! I totally auditioned and everything. So excited to join the @netflix family! #spinningout," he wrote.

Scodelario replaced Emma Roberts in Spinning Out this month. The 26-year-old actress said she's "very excited" to tell Kat's "beautifully complicated" story.
