Dec. 13 (UPI) -- Popular reality competition Dancing with the Stars will skip its spring 2019 cycle.

TV Line reported the ABC series is taking a hiatus and won't premiere a new season in the spring.

Dancing with the Stars has aired two seasons per calendar year since 2006. People said the show is expected to return to the ABC lineup in fall 2019.

The news follows Bobby Bones' surprise win with his partner, professional dancer Sharna Burgess, in Season 27. Bones took home the mirrorball trophy in November, despite often scoring lower than his competitors.

"I think most people are shocked that we won," the radio personality told Us Weekly after the finale.

"The people who voted aren't because they are the ones who kept us in and they are the ones who made this happen for us," he said.

Dancing with the Stars premiered in 2005. It is unknown if its spinoff, Dancing with the Stars: Juniors, will also take a hiatus until the fall.
