June 5 (UPI) -- Freeform has canceled its supernatural series Shadowhunters, announcing that the show's third season will be its last.

The second half of Season 3, consisting of 12 episodes, is set to arrive on Freeform in spring 2019. The series will end with a special, two-hour finale, Variety reported.

The show, inspired by the Mortal Instruments young adult book series by Cassandra Clare, follows the adventures of Shadowhunter Clary Fray (Katherine McNamara) as she discovers her heritage as a human-angel hybrid who hunts demons.

Dominic Sherwood, Alberto Rosende, Matthew Daddario, Emeraude Toubia, Isaiah Mustafa and Harry Shum Jr. also star.

McNamara, Daddario and Shum Jr. each expressed their thoughts concerning the cancellation on Twitter.

"My dear angels, we just found out too - and believe me we are as shocked as you," McNamara said. "Truly, this show has been a treasure. I fell in love with this story and its mythology instantly."

"Playing Clary has been an honor and a joy. She is such a specal, strong lady (some might say short, redheaded and bad-tempered) - thank you for entrusting her to me and coming on this journey with us," she continued before promising a memorable finale.

"It has been an absolutely wonderful experience getting to be part of Shadowhunters for the past three years," Daddario said. "After all of it, I hope I have fulfilled my promise of being the best Alec Lightwood you could ask for."

"First, I want to say thank you to the INCREDIBLE fans from all over the world! This has been an amazing journey being part of @ShadowhuntersTV & to have the opportunity to play the incomparable Magnus Bane. I am so proud of our magical cast, crew & writers for 3 wonderful seasons," Shum Jr. said.
