'The Handmaid's Tale': Hulu renews series for Season 3

May 2 (UPI) -- The Handmaid's Tale will return for Season 3.

Hulu announced at its upfront presentation Wednesday in New York that it picked up the series for a third season.

"We are incredibly proud and excited to keep the fire burning with MGM, Bruce Miller, Warren Littlefield, the producers, cast and crew on Season 3!" Elisabeth Moss, who plays Offred, said at the event.

Hulu confirmed the news on its official Twitter account.

"We are thrilled to announce today that our Emmy and Golden Globe Award-winning Original Series The Handmaid's Tale will be returning for a third season!" the company wrote.

The Handmaid's Tale is based on the Margaret Atwood novel of the same name. The show co-stars Joseph Fiennes, Yvonne Stahovski, Alexis Bledel and Samira Wiley, and debuted its second season April 25.

"Season 2 of The Handmaid's Tale just launched last week and viewing during the first 24 hours was more than double that of Season 1," Hulu said on Twitter.

Moss shared a photo on Instagram with Wiley, who portrays Ruby, at the presentation.

"My partner in crime, friendship and all things bad [expletive] @whododatlikedat #HandmaidsTale #Huluupfronts," Moss captioned the picture.
