Dec. 9 (UPI) -- HBO says it has renewed its star-studded dramedy Big Little Lies for a second season.

"We are excited to announce that @RWitherspoon and Nicole Kidman will re-team to executive produce and star in the return of #BigLittleLies on HBO," the cable network tweeted Friday.

Based on Liane Moriarty's novel, Season 1 of the show followed the relationships of a group of wealthy mothers in California. The series was nominated for five Critics' Choice Awards this week and is expected to have a presence when Golden Globe Award nods are announced Monday. It already won the Emmy for Outstanding Limited Series earlier this year.

The first season starred Reese Witherspoon, Nicole Kidman, Zoe Kravitz, Laura Dern, Shailene Woodley, Alexander Skarsgård and Adam Scott. It is unclear who other than Witherspoon and Kidman will return for the sophomore season.
