Oct. 22 (UPI) -- The Walking Dead co-star Jeffrey Dean Morgan says people are passionate about his baseball bat-swinging villain Negan -- whether they like him or not.

"The fans have been remarkably generous to myself and Negan," the 51-year-old actor recently told reporters at New York Comic Con.

"They've created this character in the comics that people love -- I mean, you love to hate. Most people are kind of taken aback by, I think, Negan's charm and there is some wisdom to him that this world needs and he does fit in," Morgan noted. "His introduction, as brutal as it is, and what's to come this year, I think you'll find out more and more about Negan and a little bit about who he is. The fans have been remarkably generous to me. I am amazed. I still get the finger flipped to me all the time. And the occasional, 'We hate you, but we love to hate you.' But it's been mostly good, though."

Season 8 of The Walking Dead premieres Sunday night on AMC.
