"I'm so happy the world got to know about Don Malarkey because he is still to this day the strongest man I have ever met in my life," Grimes told UPI at New York Comic Con.

Oct. 7 (UPI) -- Scott Grimes says he and his co-stars from the 2001 World War II miniseries Band of Brothers remain close friends more than a decade after their intense film-making collaboration.

Produced by Tom Hanks and Steven Spielberg, the 10-part epic starred Damian Lewis, Ron Livingston, Donnie Wahlberg, Micahel Cudlitz, Neal McDonough, Kirk Acevedo, Michael Fassbender, Jamie Bamber, David Schwimmer and Jason O'Mara.

Grimes played Tech. Sgt. Donald Malarkey, who died last week at the age of 96.

Asked by UPI at New York Comic Con Friday if he still feels a connection to the landmark project and the real man he played in it, Grimes said of his co-stars: "We are still as close as we ever were. You can't not be. We spent a lot of violent time together. We also got to tour with [the veterans upon whose lives the miniseries was based] and I got to know them very well."

The actor acknowledged that because of the veterans' advanced ages, the actors knew they did not have a lot of time to spend with them.

"It's really sad, but I'm just so happy that, over the last 18 years, they finally got to tell the stories that they had been keeping and holding inside for so long," Grimes went on. "There's 1,000 platoons that did something amazing in World War II, but they just happened to write about this one and I'm so happy the world got to know about Don Malarkey because he is still to this day the strongest man I have ever met in my life."

Grimes can now be seen on Fox's The Orville.
