'Veep,' 'SNL,' 'Big Little Lies,' 'Handmaid's Tale' score multiple Emmys

Sept. 17 (UPI) -- Veep was named Best Comedy and The Handmaid's Tale was declared Best Drama at the 69th Emmy Awards ceremony in Los Angeles Sunday night.

Veep lead Julia Louis-Dreyfus won the statuette for Best Actress in a Comedy, while The Handmaid's Tale also picked up the prizes for Best Actress in a Drama for Elisabeth Moss and Best Supporting Actress in a Drama for Ann Dowd, as well as Best Writing and Best Directing for a Drama.

Donald Glover went home with the Emmys for Best Actor in a Comedy Series and Best Directing of a Comedy for Atlanta, and Sterling K. Brown was honored with the Best Actor in a Drama accolade for This is Us. The Best Supporting Actor in a Drama trophy went to John Lithgow for The Crown.

Big Little Lies was another big winner at the event honoring excellence in television. It was named Best Limited Series, and its stars Laura Dern, Nicole Kidman and Alexander Skarsgard won for Best Supporting Actress, Best Actress and Best Supporting Actor in a Limited Series or a Television Movie respectively. The show also won the Emmy for Best Directing for a Limited Series, Movie or Dramatic Special.

Riz Ahmed took home the statuette for Best Actor in a Limited Series or a Television Movie for The Night Of.

Lena Waithe won the award for Outstanding Writing for a Comedy Series alongside Aziz Ansari for cowriting the Thanksgiving episode of Netflix's Master of None.

Last Week Tonight With John Oliver scored the awards for Best Variety Talk Series and Best Writing for a Variety Series.

Saturday Night Live scored the title of Best Variety Sketch Series and Kate McKinnon and Alec Baldwin earned the awards for Best Supporting Actress and Best Supporting Actor in a Comedy. Dave Chappelle and Melissa McCarthy were presented with prizes for Best Guest Actor and Actress in a Comedy at the Creative Arts Emmy Awards gala last week.

Stephen Colbert hosted Sunday's event, which aired on CBS from the Microsoft Theatre.
