Sept. 13 (UPI) -- Grey's Anatomy star Jason George has joined the cast of a new spinoff about firefighters.

The 45-year-old actor, who plays Dr. Ben Warren in the original ABC show, will serve as a series regular in the forthcoming drama, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

George's transition to the spinoff will reportedly be "a key part" of his character's storyline in Grey's Anatomy Season 14, which premieres Sept. 28. He will remain a series regular on the show until the spinoff starts production.

George joins previously announced star Jaina Lee Ortiz (Rosewood, Shooter). George, who may continue to make appearances on Grey's Anatomy after the spinoff begins, reacted to his casting in a tweet Tuesday.

"Oh, and, um,...this is happening... The #greysanatomy universe is expanding," he wrote.

The new show is the second Grey's Anatomy spinoff following Private Practice, and was given a straight-to-series order in May. The show will follow a group of Seattle firefighters in their personal and professional lives.

George joined Grey's Anatomy in Season 6, and was made a series regular in Season 12. His previous roles include Michael Bourne on Sunset Beach, J.T. Hunter on Eve, and Dominic Taylor on Mistresses.
