Sept. 8 (UPI) -- Sinead O'Connor says she's tired of being defined as "the crazy person."
The 50-year-old Irish singer opened up about her mental health and her late mom's alleged abuse in a preview for the Sept. 12 episode of The Dr. Phil Show.
"I am fed up with being defined as, you know, the crazy person, the child abuse survivor," she told host Phil McGraw, aka Dr. Phil.
O'Connor's mom, Marie O'Connor, died in a car crash when the singer was 19 years old. The star maintained her mom was physically and sexually abusive, telling Dr. Phil the thing she loves about her mother is "that she's dead."
"She ran a torture chamber," she said of her mom. "She was a person who took delight in hurting you."
O'Connor's interview will air a little more than a year after she said she was suicidal in a Facebook video. She posted a clip in August 2016 that showed her crying as she described what it's like to live with mental illness.
"I'm fighting like all the millions I know to stay alive everyday which I'm doing because I love the people that are doing this to me," the star said at the time. "I'm not staying alive for me. If it was me I'd be gone straight away back to my mom."
Dr. Phil said on Wednesday's episode of Jimmy Kimmel Live! that O'Connor approached him in the hope her interview would help de-stigmatize mental illness. O'Connor's interview will air Tuesday in syndication.
