WWE Smackdown: Shinsuke Nakamura becomes No. 1 contender

Sept. 6 (UPI) -- Shinsuke Nakamura earned a title shot against Jinder Mahal for his WWE Championship Tuesday on Smackdown Live after taking on Randy Orton.

The main event of the night, Orton proved to be one of Nakamura's toughest challenges since arriving in the WWE.

A competitive match, The Viper seemed poised to strike with his patent finishing maneuver the RKO, however, The Artist was able to avoid the move twice during the bout.

Nakamura ended things when he connected with the Kinshasa for the three count. Nakamura will now face Mahal for the WWE Championship at Hell in a Cell on Oct. 8. The Modern Day Maharaja was seen viewing Nakamura's match alongside his henchmen, The Singh Brothers.

Also on Smackdown Live, commissioner Shane McMahon confronted Kevin Owens at the start of the show as he attempted to become a special-guest referee in a match between Smackdown Women's Champion Natalya and Ms. Money in the Bank Carmella.

Tired of his antics, McMahon tried to stop Owens before he got in a war of words with his rival. Things started to heat up once Owens brought up McMahon's family, including his kids.

In a rage, McMahon attacked Owens and tackled him over the announce table where he continued to throw punches. Only Smackdown general manager Daniel Bryan was able to calm McMahon down as he continued to fight despite the arrival of referees and WWE officials.

Due to being attacked by his boss, Owens threatened to sue the McMahon family and the WWE in order to bring down the company completely. Shortly afterward, Bryan received a phone call from Shane's father, the chairman and CEO of WWE Vince McMahon, who instructed him to suspend his son indefinitely.

After Bryan suspended McMahon in the middle of the ring, the Total Bellas star confirmed to Owens that Vince would be arriving next week on Smackdown to personally attend to the matter.

Other moments from Smackdown Live included Natalya defeating Carmella; Dolph Ziggler re-debuting on Smackdown by mocking a number of Superstars; Aiden English defeating Sami Zayn; and Baron Corbin defeating Tye Dillinger.
