Sept. 6 (UPI) -- Tom D'Agostino, Jr., says he's "very sad" about his divorce from Luann de Lesseps.

The 50-year-old businessman addressed his split from the Real Housewives of New York star for the first time in an interview with E! News published Wednesday.

"I fell in love, got married quickly and am very sad that two people in love are not together," he said. "The publicized reasons for the divorce make for a great reality TV storyline. I wish Luann much happiness and love."

De Lesseps announced her split from D'Agostino in a tweet Aug. 3 after just seven months of marriage. She later explained on Watch What Happens Live that she filed for divorce after discovering D'Agostino hung out with an ex-girlfriend.

"It was the weekend before the [Season 9] reunion, basically," the star recalled. "Tom went out and he called up an old girlfriend. They met up with a group of people and I didn't know about it. I found out about it the next day in the press. That for me was like the final straw."

De Lesseps had confessed on the Season 9 finale, which was filmed prior to her split, that it was challenging to keep her relationship with D'Agostino afloat. The admission came after months of tension with her co-stars, including Bethenny Frankel, over her marriage.

"It makes me said that she's so angry with me for no apparent reason, except that, you know, I'm getting married too quick for her taste," she said of Frankel on Watch What Happens Live in September.

The Real Housewives of New York completed a ninth season Aug. 30.
