Aug. 30 (UPI) -- Unlikely teams were forced to coexist Tuesday on Smackdown Live as Shinsuke Nakamura and Randy Orton came together to take on WWE Champion Jinder Mahal and Rusev.

The main event of the night, the Tag Team match took place after it was announced that Nakamura and Orton would be facing each other next week to determine the No. 1 contender for Mahal's championship.

The superstar pairing proved to be too much for The Modern Day Maharaja and The Bulgarian Brute who were also joined by Mahal's henchmen, The Singh Brothers. Nakamura won the match after The Artist delivered a Kinshasa to Rusev for the three count.

As Nakamura and Orton celebrated in the ring together, The Viper quickly striked and laid out his future opponent with a thunderous RKO out of nowhere.

Also on Smackdown, United States Champion AJ Styles began his U.S. open challenge where he will give anyone a chance to face him for the title.

Tye Dillinger answered the call but was approached by an angry Baron Corbin on his way to the ring who was upset about not being able to challenge The Phenomenal One himself.

After a brief scuffle, Dillinger was still able to face Styles as he punched out Corbin and had the referee immediately start the match. What followed was a lightening-fast, but still competitive, bout that ended with The Perfect 10 tapping out to Styles' Calf Crusher after reversing the Tye Breaker.

Corbin continued his assault on Dillinger, but The Lone Wolf was quickly hit with a Phenomenal Forearm from Styles for his troubles.

Other moments on Smackdown Live included Shelton Benjamin and Chad Gable defeating The Ascension in their first match together; Bobby Roode defeating Mike Kanellis with a Glorious DDT; Kevin Owens getting into an argument with Shane McMahon before making himself the referee in a match between Sami Zayn and Aiden English; Tamina defeating a local competitor; Breezango returning with another edition of The Fashion Files; and Smackdown Tag Team Champions The Usos defeating The New Day which allows them to choose the stipulation for The New Day's upcoming championship rematch.
