Aug. 26 (UPI) -- The BBC says it is working on a 25th anniversary special and new season of episodes featuring Steve Coogan as Alan Partridge.

Shane Allen, controller of BBC Comedy, announced this week the British network's plan to bring the fictional -- and hilariously inept -- interviewer back to television.

The 25th anniversary program is set to air before the end of the year and fresh episodes are slated to debut in 2018. The character has appeared in numerous formats over the years, including a radio show, TV sitcom, mini-episodes and a feature film.

"Alan Partridge is in the top tier of comedy characters of all time, it fills my comedy heart with joy to welcome him back to BBC One and BBC Two," Allen said in a statement.
