Aug. 16 (UPI) -- A new WWE Champion was nearly crowned Tuesday on Smackdown Live as Baron Corbin cashed in his Money in the Bank contract for an instant championship match against Jinder Mahal.

Corbin made the decision to use the briefcase he earned in June after he took notice of how Mahal was dazed following a main event match against John Cena.

Cena was poised the defeat The Modern-Day Maharaja after he delivered a ring-shaking Super Attitude Adjustment from the turnbuckles. Corbin then arrived and broke up the three count and attacked Cena following remarks the Cenation Leader made last week.

With Mahal's henchmen The Singh Brothers gone from being previously thrown out by the referee, Corbin saw this as his opportunity to become champion. As The Lone Wolf officially cashed in and the bell rang, Cena appeared on the apron before Corbin quickly knocked him back down. The distraction was enough for Mahal to quickly roll up Corbin for a quick three count to retain the WWE Championship.

Infuriated Corbin lost his cool inside the ring as Mahal celebrated and smiled as he headed up the ramp. Corbin will be able to get his revenge against Cena at SummerSlam while Mahal will be defending his title against Shinsuke Nakamura at the event that takes place Sunday.

Also on Smackdown Live, Tag Team Champions The New Day, consisting of members Xavier Woods and Kofi Kingston, took on The Usos in a non-title match before the two teams meet with the titles on the line at SummerSlam.

The Usos gained the victory after the twins atacked Kingston's knee and delivered a double Superkick for the three count. The New Day will be using members Woods and Big E to defend their gold at SummerSlam.

Other moments from Smackdown Live included Mahal celebrating Indian Independence Day; Natalya defeating Becky Lynch; Randy Orton delivering a surprise RKO to Rusev; AJ Styles apologizing to commissioner Shane McMahon for accidentally hitting him last week before Kevin Owens accidentally struck McMahon; and Breezango starring in another edition of Fashion Peaks.
