The bout, a fantasy scenario many professional wrestling fans thought they would never see, featured one of Japan's biggest wrestling stars, Nakamura, taking on one of the biggest stars from the United States, Cena.
The dream match did not disappoint as both squared circle veterans performed their signature moves in their quest to face Mahal who was seen watching the contest from a luxurious skybox inside the arena.
Cena seemed poised to put Nakamura away when he nailed The Rockstar with an Attitude Adjustment. After Cena attempted to perform a second AA in a row, Nakamura turned the tide by hitting Cena with a Reverse Exploder followed by a Kinshasa for the three count.
The finishing sequence of events featured Cena landing awkwardly on his neck however, the 16-time world champion appeared to be okay as he shook hands with Nakamura following the match. Mahal will now be defending his WWE Championship against Nakamura at SummerSlam on Aug. 20.
Also on Smackdown Live, United States Champion AJ Styles defended his title against Kevin Owens who was invoking his rematch clause after he lost the belt to The Phenomenal One last week in a Triple Threat match that also featured Chris Jericho.
The match ended in controversy after Owens inadvertently struck the referee in the face before Styles quickly rolled up the self-proclaimed New Face of America for the victory. Seemingly blinded, the referee still counted to three and declared Styles the winner despite Owens having his shoulder up.
Owens, who was seen losing his cool backstage, confronted Smackdown commissioner Shane McMahon and general manager Daniel Bryan about being granted another rematch due to the referee making the wrong call.
The Smackdown management team agreed and granted Owens a rematch against Styles for the United States Championship at SummerSlam with McMahon as the special guest referee to ensure that the same mistake won't happen twice.
Other highlights from Smackdown Live included The Usos mocking The New Day's entrance; Aiden English defeating Sami Zayn; Smackdown Women's Champion Naomi and Becky Lynch defeating Ms. Money in the Bank Carmella and Natalya; and Rusev defeating Chad Gable before being challenged by Randy Orton to a match at SummerSlam.
