July 28 (UPI) -- The Mindy Project Season 6 will feature the return of Chris Messina.

Series creator and star Mindy Kaling and showrunner Matt Warburton confirmed Thursday at the Television Critics Association summer press tour that Messina will reprise Danny Castellano in the Hulu show's final season, according to TVLine.

Messina starred as Danny, Mindy Lahiri's (Kaling) ex-fiancé and the father of her son, in Seasons 1 through 4, but appeared only as a guest star in Season 5. Danny married Sarah midway through the season, while Mindy wed Ben (Bryan Greenberg) in the Season 5 finale.

"The one thing we can promise the audience is a little bit of clarity about where they stand," Warburton teased, according to the The Hollywood Reporter. "It's so great to see him back because we've always known they're always going to be in each other's lives ... but it's great to actually see what that means this season."

"It's complicated," Kaling added. "They're both married to other people, so we went into that season with all of that, which makes things sort of fun and delicious."

Kaling said Mindy's marriage to Ben will play a big role in the season, with the character discovering "the reality of marriage" and learning "what lives up to the expectations and what didn't." She also hinted Mindy may end up in a surprising place.

"I think that all of us would agree that we do have 'happily ever after,' the connotations of it, that everything is tied up neatly in a bow, is something we aren't super interested in," the actress said. "That side of it I think we're trying to avoid, while also leaving the audience with the sense of feeling that it was about something and that it really was a project and that she had some growth in the end."

The Mindy Project co-stars Ed Weeks, Ike Barinholtz and Tamra Webb, and will return for a final season Sept. 12 on Hulu. Modern Family star Julie Bowen will guest star as "a rival mother" in the season.
