July 2 (UPI) -- Season 10 of Doctor Who ended Saturday, setting up Peter Capaldi's final appearance as the titular time-traveler in a forthcoming Christmas special.

The BBC confirmed the December program will be "a multi-Doctor adventure featuring the current Doctor and the First Doctor."

David Bradley played the First Doctor in the finale, taking over the role from William Hartnell, who died in 1975 at the age of 67. Bradley will also appear as the First Doctor in the 2017 holiday episode when the 13th Doctor will be introduced.

"The cliff-hanger ending saw the Doctor fatally shot by a Mondasian Cyberman and begin to regenerate," a press release about this weekend's season finale noted. "Stepping out of the TARDIS into an arctic landscape, he fought off the glowing regeneration energy and fell to his knees, vowing that this time he would not live on and change into a new Doctor. This was declared 'ridiculous' by an approaching figure, who mocked the Doctor as he stepped forward through the snow to reveal himself as the very first incarnation of the Time Lord, ['The original, you might say,'] just before the credits rolled."

Capaldi announced in January that he was leaving the iconic, sci-fi series after three seasons.

The show debuted in 1963 and ran until 1989. A TV movie aired in 1996 and the show returned full-time in 2005.
