May 17 (UPI) -- Jinder Mahal continued his winning ways on Smackdown Live Tuesday as he defeated AJ Styles and laid out WWE Champion Randy Orton.

In a battle between No. 1 contenders, Mahal faced Styles in the opening contest of the night as he was accompanied once again by the Singh Brothers. Also at ringside sat Styles' upcoming Backlash opponent, United States Champion Kevin Owens who was providing guest commentary for the match.

Despite his best efforts, the numbers game was too much for The Phenomenal One to handle as the Singh Brothers distracted the referee in order to allow Owens to nail Styles in the leg with the United States Championship as he was setting up to deliver a Phenomenal Forearm.

This gave Mahal the opportunity to plant Styles with The Khallas for the three count.

In the main event, Orton took on Baron Corbin in a physical match that ended with The Viper landing a surprise RKO for the victory. Orton was not given much time to celebrate as Mahal approached the ring declaring that he would destroy his rival's pride, body and future at Backlash.

It was then that the Singh Brothers sneak-attacked the champ from behind. After fending off the ambush, Orton was then laid out by The Maharaja with The Khallas. Mahal then stood above Orton once again holding up the WWE Championship as Smackdown went off the air.

Orton will defend his WWE Championship against Mahal this Sunday at Backlash, which will also feature Owens putting his United States Championship on the line against Styles.

Also on Smackdown, Owens hosted his own version of Chris Jericho's Highlight Reel, Breezango defeated The Colons in a Tag Team Match and a contract was signed by Smackdown Women's Champion Naomi, Becky Lynch and Charlotte Flair to face Carmella, Natalya and Tamina at Backlash which was followed up by Carmella defeating Naomi in a non-title match.
