ABC's 'Dirty Dancing' remake: What we know

April 6 (UPI) -- ABC says its three-hour remake of 1987's Dirty Dancing will explain what happens to unlikely lovers Baby and Johnny after their life-changing summer together.

Starring Abigail Breslin, Colt Prattes, Debra Messing, Bruce Greenwood, Nicole Scherzinger, Sarah Hyland, Tony Roberts, Katey Sagal, Billy Dee Williams and J. Quinton Johnson, the 1960s-set movie is scheduled to premiere on May 24.

Fresh perspective

The network said in a press release the coming-of-age story will be "told from a fresh perspective, diving deeper into the iconic characters, showcasing their progression and tackling social themes like race, women's rights and the socio-economic division in the country at that time."

"Spending the summer at a Catskills resort with her family, Frances 'Baby' Houseman falls in love with the camp's dance instructor, Johnny Castle, and nothing is ever the same for anyone in the Houseman family," ABC noted. "Discover what happens to Baby and Johnny after that summer and more about the supporting characters from the original film. This fresh reimagining explores the relationship between Jake and Marjorie Houseman, Lisa's goals in life and uncovers a fully realized character in Neil, with plenty of surprises in store."

Viewers will be treated to new recordings of "She's Like the Wind," "Hungry Eyes"

The film's soundtrack will include updated versions of the beloved songs from the original film such as "Time of My Life," "Love Man,"  "Do You Love Me," "Hungry Eyes" and "She's Like the Wind."

Well-known songs new to Dirty Dancing, such as "Fever" and "They Can't Take That Away From Me," will also be heard.

Jennifer Grey will not have a cameo

The original film starred Jennifer Grey and Patrick Swayze, but the actress, now 57, turned down an offer to appear in the new version of her blockbuster, which was released in theaters on Aug. 21, 1987.

"I was flattered because I always want to be asked because it's nice to be included," Grey said last summer. "But for me, it would be sacrosanct for me to do it because it didn't feel appropriate to me."

"It feels like if you're going to do your own thing, do your own thing," she explained. "I wouldn't say [what role was offered] but I will tell you, it wasn't Baby!"

Swayze died of pancreatic cancer in 2009 at the age of 57.
