March 25 (UPI) -- John Wick and Ice Age star John Leguizamo has signed on to play ATF agent Robert Rodriguez in Waco, a six-part event series to premiere on Paramount Network in 2018.

Set to begin shooting next month in New Mexico, the miniseries will be based on the true story of the 51-day standoff in 1993 that began with a Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms raid of David Koresh's religious compound in Texas. The siege ended in a shootout and fire that left nearly 100 people dead.

"We are thrilled to have John in this part. He brings phenomenal range and authenticity to everything he does," Ted Gold, senior vice president of scripted original series for Paramount, said in a statement Friday. "The role of Robert Rodriguez is little known, but utterly fascinating as he was the only undercover agent to infiltrate David Koresh's compound."

Produced by The Weinstein Co., the program will co-star Michael Shannon as lead FBI negotiator Gary Noesner, while Taylor Kitsch will portray cult leader Koresh.
