"I am thrilled to bring this show to an end the way we always intended -- with Nina back to help us say goodbye," Plec said in a statement.

"I'm so excited to have Nina back to ensure our farewell episode is truly epic!" Williamson added.

Dobrev last appeared on The Vampire Diaries Season 6 finale. She explained her decision to leave the show in a post in April 2015, saying she "always knew [she] wanted Elena's story to be a six season adventure."

"Within those six years I got the journey of a lifetime," the star wrote. "I was a human, a vampire, a doppelganger, a crazy immortal, a doppelganger pretending to be a human, a human pretending to be a doppelganger."

"Elena fell in love not once, but twice, with two epic soulmates, and I myself made some of the best friends I'll ever know and built an extended family I will love forever," she added.

Dobrev has since appeared in the film The Final Girls, and xXx: The Return of Xander Cage with Vin Diesel. She is slated for the movie Crash Pad with Domhnall Gleeson and Flatliners with Diego Luna.
