LOS ANGELES, Jan. 17 (UPI) -- Former Flash star Rick Cosnett has announced that he will be returning to the superhero series as part of the ongoing third season.

"Ok, hate to tease you but now I can say it: I'm coming back on #TheFlash," the actor wrote on Twitter Monday.

Cosnett appeared prominently during the first season of The Flash as detective Eddie Thawne who worked with Barry Allen's (Grant Gustin) adoptive father Joe West (Jesse L. Martin) and was the love interest of his daughter Iris West (Candice Patton).

Eddie, an ancestor of villain Reverse Flash Eobard Thawne from the future, sacrificed himself during Season 1 in order to prevent his descendant from being born.

Characters returning from the dead are a normal occurrence on The Flash as the series features time-travel, and multiple alternate versions of Earth.

Cosnett made a brief appearance during the second season after The Flash traveled back in time in order to persuade Eddie to record a goodbye video for Iris.
