LOS ANGELES, Dec. 19 (UPI) -- Actor and stand-up comedian Joel McHale is to host the 2017 People's Choice Awards ceremony in Los Angeles on Jan. 18, CBS announced Monday.

"The people have spoken, and they want Jimmy Kimmel to host the 2017 Oscars! And the people have also spoken, and said that it would be OK if I hosted the 2017 People's Choice Awards. Well, one person said that. Luckily, that person was [CBS boss] Les Moonves, so no one questioned it," said McHale in a statement.

"Joel is a brilliant comedic talent, and the perfect host for this show," added executive producer Mark Burnett. "He is a triple threat. An actor; a writer and a performer, and we look forward to him bringing all of those amazing talents to People's Choice Awards 2017."

McHale is known for his work on the sitcoms The Great Indoors and Community. He also served for years as host of The Soup. He was the emcee at the White House Correspondents' Association Dinner in Washington, D.C., in 2014 and he hosted the 2015 ESPY Awards.
