LOS ANGELES, Dec. 1 (UPI) -- A Sons of Anarchy spinoff is officially in the works at FX.
The network will shoot a pilot for the new series Mayans MC written and directed by Sons of Anarchy creator Kurt Sutter, Entertainment Weekly reported Thursday.
"The Mayans M.C. is back in business. #SoA spinoff pilot announced," the official Sons of Anarchy Twitter page confirmed.
Sutter and his producing partner Elgin James will co-write and executive produce the project, according to Variety. The pilot will begin shooting in March, with the cast still to be announced.
Mayans MC will focus on the Mayans motorcycle club from Sons of Anarchy. The show will follow EZ Reyes, a prospective member living near the California/Mexico border, as he "struggles with his desire for vengeance against the cartel."
Sons of Anarchy starred Charlie Hunnam, Katey Sagal and Mark Boone Junior, and had a seven-season run from 2008 to 2014. Sutter told Deadline in September that fans may see familiar characters in the spinoff.
"I would do a contemporary piece, not a prequel, and place it far enough away from Northern California that it wouldn't step on the mythology that's already been told," he said of the project. "It doesn't mean that there couldn't be some cool, ironic crossovers with familiar characters as the series progressed."
