The show stars Barrymore and Olyphant as Sheila and Joe, married real estate agents living in suburban Santa Clarita, Calif., with their daughter, Abby (Liv Hewson). The series follows the family as Sheila "goes through a dramatic change."

"[The show] is crazy and exciting," Barrymore toId Hamptons magazine in May. "I haven't worked very much so that I could raise my children. It feels fresh to go back to something I've known for so long. It's funny how you can make it new again."

Santa Clarita Diet is created by Victor Fresco (Better Off Ted), and co-stars Ricardo Chavira and Skyler Gisondo. Barrymore, Olyphant and Fresco also serve as executive producers.

Barrymore had said on the Today show in 2014 that she plans on taking fewer roles in order to focus on daughters Olive and Frankie. She last starred in the movie Miss You Already with Toni Collette.
