LOS ANGELES, Nov. 8 (UPI) -- Kelly Bishop spoke about Gilmore Girls matriarch Emily's journey after the death of her husband Richard, saying "it's a huge part of the whole thing for her."

Bishop and Edward Herrmann played Richard and Emily Gilmore, parents to Lorelei and grandparents to Rory, during all seven season of the series, which is being revived on Netflix for a four-part release later this month.

Herrmann died of brain cancer in December 2014, and Bishop spoke about how Emily is adjusting to life without Richard in the new episodes.

"Emily is dealing with widowhood and it's a huge part of the whole thing for her," Bishop said. "She has different adventures, some of them are funny, some of them are sad. She's just kind of plodding along trying to find herself, how she does it now, what it means."

That might explain the change in Emily's wardrobe.

The trailer showed the eldest Gilmore decked out in jeans and a T-shirt -- a departure from her usual tailored style.

"It was meant to be rather shocking," Bishop said. "It was something that was supposed to really surprise people."
