Dwayne Johnson, Will Ferrell developing professional wrestling-themed comedy at Fox

LOS ANGELES, Oct. 24 (UPI) -- Dwayne Johnson and Will Ferrell are teaming up for a new professional wrestling-themed comedy series at Fox.

According to Variety, Johnson who started out as one of WWE's biggest stars The Rock, is basing the series on his and former WWE head writer Brian Gewirtz's real life experiences working for the sports-entertainment company.

Being developed through Johnson's Seven Bucks Productions, which recently launched his YouTube channel, and Ferrell's Gary Sanchez Productions, the currently untitled show will follow a young up and coming wrestler and his relationship with a comedy writer who works backstage as they navigate through the colorful world of wrestling.

Ferrell, who is producing, will also be joined by his frequent collaborator Adam McKay who is executive producing alongside Johnson and Gewirtz. Writer Andrew Gurland, known for his work on FX's Married, is penning the script.

"This November will mark the 20th anniversary of my professional wrestling debut," said Johnson in a statement. "I was 24 years old, putting in the hard work, making $40 bucks per match and had no clue of the long journey that lay ahead of me with characters and backstage stories so colorful you'd think there's no way that can be true. The entertaining show that goes on in front of the crowd pales in comparison to the insanely entertaining show that goes on backstage. Brian and myself can't wait to tell our stories."

"Ferrell and I met in the wrestling ring so doing this show with Dwayne Johnson brings us full circle," added McKay. "And there's no one more talented (or limber) than Andrew Gurland to steer this project."

Currently the series has no set release window.

Johnson originally debuted in the WWE-- then WWF -- in 1996 as the heavily-touted third generation Superstar Rocky Maivia. He would go on to become one of the greatest WWE Superstar's of all-time who rose to fame during the height of WWE's popularity in the '90s.

A ten-time world champion, The Rock committed himself to Hollywood around 2003 but continues to make sporadic WWE appearances to this day.
