Reese Witherspoon, Nicole Kidman star in first teaser trailer for HBO's 'Big Little Lies'

LOS ANGELES, Oct. 17 (UPI) -- Reese Witherspoon, Nicole Kidman and Shailene Woodley star as a trio of mothers in the first mysterious teaser trailer for HBO's upcoming limited series, Big Little Lies.

The clip, released Saturday, offers few details concerning the plot of the series but does focus on Witherspoon's character as she holds a conversation about the ocean with a young girl.

"What do you look at in the ocean? What's out there? Monsters?" the girl asks. "It's full of life, dreams, mystery... who knows what lies out there beneath the surface," Witherspoon responds.

Other scenes shown include the appearance of a gun and cast members Adam Scott, Laura Dern, Zoe Kravitz and Alexander Skarsgard getting intimate.

Based on the 2014 Liane Moriarty novel of the same name, Big Little Lies will follow three mothers as they deal with a tragedy.

Created by David E. Kelly, the series is set to premiere on HBO starting in 2017. No release date has been announced.
