BEVERLY HILLS , Calif., Sept. 20 (UPI) -- The Hobbit alum John Bell and Waking the Dead veteran Wil Johnson have joined the cast of Outlander for Season 3, Starz and Sony Pictures Television announced Tuesday.

Bell will play Young Ian in the costume drama's 18th-century storyline, while Johnson will play Joe Abernathy in the show's second plotline, which takes place in Boston in the 20th century.

Based on Diana Gabaldon's eight-book series of fantasy novels and starring Sam Heughan and Caitriona Balfe, "the third season of Outlander picks up right after Claire travels through the stones to return to her life in 1948," a press release said.

"Now pregnant, she struggles with the fallout of her sudden reappearance and its effect on her marriage to her first husband, Frank. Meanwhile, in the 18th century, Jamie suffers from the aftermath of his doomed last stand at the historic battle of Culloden, as well as the loss of Claire."
