LOS ANGELES, Sept. 19 (UPI) -- Sarah Paulson brought a special date to the 2016 Primetime Emmy Awards on Sunday.

The 41-year-old actress won an Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Limited Series or Movie for her portrayal of Marcia Clark in The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story with the real-life former prosecutor by her side.

Paulson and Clark, 63, walked the red carpet together before taking their seats at the ceremony. The actress apologized to Clark during her acceptance speech for her judgments during the O.J. Simpson murder trial.

"The responsibility of playing a real person is an enormous one. You want to get it right not for you but for them," she told the audience. "I, along with the rest of the world, had been superficial in my judgment, and I'm glad that I'm able to stand here in front of everyone today and say, 'I'm sorry.'"

Paulson and Clark visited the winners circle after the speech, where the actress had Clark's name engraved with her own on her Emmy statuette. Clark had nothing but praise for the star when she spoke to Us Weekly backstage.

"To have someone as phenomenal as Sarah play me and then win? It feels pretty great," she admitted.

The People v. O.J. Simpson walked away with four other wins, including Outstanding Lead Actor in a Limited Series or Movie for Courtney B. Vance and Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Limited Series or Movie for Sterling K. Brown.

"Congrats to @MsSarahPaulson for the Emmy! So deserved it! Xoxoxo to her," Clark tweeted early Monday. "Congrats to Sterling, Courtney and DV and Ryan and the entire brilliant cast and crew of Crime Story."
