NEW YORK, Sept. 13 (UPI) -- True Blood and Get On Up alum Nelsan Ellis has joined the cast of the mystery drama Elementary for Season 5.

Ellis will play Shinwell Johnson, a former patient of surgeon-turned-sober companion-turned-sleuth Joan Watson, played by Lucy Liu. Ellis' character first appeared in Arthur Conan Doyle's 1924 story "The Illustrious Client."

"When a serial bomber becomes active again after being dormant for six years, Watson seeks help from Shinwell Johnson, a former patient whose life she saved when she was a surgeon," a press release from CBS explained. "Also, Holmes senses Watson is unhappy and questions whether she is still fulfilled by her detective career, on the fifth season premiere of Elementary."

Featuring Jonny Lee Miller as the brilliant, consulting detective Sherlock Holmes, Elementary is the contemporary, New York-set adaptation of Doyle's classic, London-located tales. The show will return with fresh episodes on Oct. 2.
