Jim Broadbent joins cast of 'Game of Thrones' Season 7

LOS ANGELES, Sept. 1 (UPI) -- Acclaimed actor Jim Broadbent has signed on to star in Season 7 of HBO's Game of Thrones.

According to Entertainment Weekly, Broadbent is the first new actor cast for the upcoming penultimate season in a significant role that is being kept secret.

Production on Season 7 is set to begin soon in Northern Ireland, Spain and Iceland.

In July, HBO programming president Casey Bloys confirmed that Game of Thrones would be coming to an end with Season 8. Both seasons 7 and 8 are expected to contain less then ten episodes each, the average seen in previous seasons.

Broadbent is known for his roles in films such as Bridget Jones's Diary, Moulin Rouge!, Hot Fuzz, The Iron Lady, Cloud Atlas and as Horace Slughorn in the Harry Potter series. The 67-year-old won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor for his role in 2001's Iris.

Star Maisie Williams who portrays Arya Stark on Game of Thrones recently teased Season 7 on social media writing,"I'd start preparing yourselves now."
