'American Crime Story' Season 2 to take place during Hurricane Katrina

LOS ANGELES, Aug. 10 (UPI) -- After recreating the O.J. Simpson trial, American Crime Story will next tackle Hurricane Katrina and how it affected New Orleans for Season 2.

"I'd say it's even more massive and more sprawling than [The People v O.J. Simpson]," executive producer Brad Simpson noted Tuesday at the Television Critics Association press tour according to CNN.

"We wanted to do something that would still have the epic quality and the thing you remember from Katrina is everybody sitting in their bedrooms and watching these people on their roofs going, 'How can we not help them? How is this happening?'" he continued about how after Season 1 producers did not want to tackle another murder trial.

"And what we want to do is go behind the scenes of that and explain this is the reason [officials] weren't prepared to help them."

Brad also discussed how actors from Season 1 could return for new roles if it is seen as a good fit. Characters based on real-life figures are expected to appear as well with Brad noting, "It's always fun to find out what was really going on behind the scenes with the famous people, but beyond that, finding characters that you didn't know were going through such an enormous struggle is a ton of fun. It's like we're writing our own nonfiction book about Katrina."

Production will be taking place in both New Orleans and Los Angeles with the season debuting sometime in 2017.

American Crime Story: The People vs. O.J. Simpson was nominated for 22 Emmy awards in July, with six of them going towards members of its cast.
