'Doctor Who' showrunner: Peter Capaldi to stay past Season 10

LONDON, Aug. 3 (UPI) -- Peter Capaldi will remain on Doctor Who past Season 10.

Showrunner Steven Moffat said in the July 28 issue of Doctor Who magazine that he believes the 58-year-old actor will play the Twelfth Doctor in Season 11 and beyond.

"I have no reason to suppose that I'm writing out a Doctor," the writer and producer said. "Peter is loving the role, and long may he do so."

Moffat will leave the long-running BBC series after Season 10. Capaldi had told the RadioTimes in March that the network wants him to stay on following the showrunner's departure.

"I've been asked to stay on, but it's such a long time before I have to make that decision," the actor said. "Steven's been absolutely wonderful, so I love working with him."

"I don't know where the show's gonna go" afterward, he said. "I have to make up my mind, and I haven't yet."

Season 10 will air a Christmas special in December before premiering in 2017. The season will introduce Pearl Mackie as the Doctor's companion Bill in the wake of Jenna Coleman's exit.
