LOS ANGELES, June 16 (UPI) -- Tyler Hoechlin will play Superman in Supergirl on The CW.
The network confirmed the 28-year-old actor will portray the superhero in a tweet Thursday after announcing Hoechlin's casting in a press release the same day.
"It's a bird...it's a plane...it's @TylerL_Hoechlin as Superman! #SupergirlCW is coming to The CW this fall," the show tweeted from its official Twitter account.
Hoechlin will play Clark Kent, aka Superman, in Season 2, which premieres in October. The character communicated with Supergirl (Melissa Benoist) in Season 1, but has yet to come face-to-face with his cousin as an adult.
"Greg [Berlanti] and I have wanted to work with Tyler for ages, so this worked out perfectly because Tyler is Superman," executive producer Andrew Kreisberg said in a statement. "We are so thrilled and humbled to add another amazing actor to the legacy of this iconic character."
Kreisberg previously announced Superman would appear in Season 2 but had yet to reveal Hoechlin's casting. Tom Welling, who played the superhero in The WB/CW series Smallville, was among those rumored for the role.
"Greg, Ali [Adler] and I are beyond thrilled to welcome Clark Kent and his slightly-more-famous alter ego to the world of Supergirl," Kreisberg said at the time. "Superman will be appearing in the first two episodes of the new season."
