LOS ANGELES, June 6 (UPI) -- Supergirl will welcome a new superhero in Season 2.

Executive producer Andrew Kreisberg delighted fans by announcing in a statement Monday that Superman will appear on The CW series.

"Greg [Berlanti], Ali [Adler] and I are beyond thrilled to welcome Clark Kent and his slightly-more-famous alter ego to the world of Supergirl," Kreisberg said.

"Superman will be appearing in the first two episodes of the new season and we cannot wait to see who next dons the red cape!" he added.

Supergirl (Melissa Benoist) and Superman are cousins whose home planet, Krypton, was destroyed when they were children. The characters communicated via instant messaging in Season 1 but have yet to meet face-to-face as adults.

"I think the reason why Superman's not in the show is because it's not about him," executive producer Sarah Shechter previously explained to Hit Fix. "He is just sort of shadow in the back of [Supergirl's] psyche."

Henry Cavill presently plays Superman in the DC Comics cinematic universe. Tom Welling played a younger version of the character on The WB/CW series Smallville, which came to a close after 10 seasons in 2011.

"There's people who would like it [if I reprised Superman on Supergirl]... there's people who don't like it, but I will tell you that no one has ever actually asked me to do it," Welling told BuzzFeed in January.

"So, I don't know. It would be kind of odd," the actor admitted. "I don't know who [Clark] is at that point. He would obviously be Superman."

Supergirl co-stars Mehcad Brooks, Chyler Leigh, Jeremy Jordan, David Harwood and Calista Flockhart and premiered on CBS in October. The series was renewed for a second season in May but will move to The CW.
