LOS ANGELES, May 16 (UPI) -- The Mysteries of Laura has been canceled after two seasons.

NBC gave the police procedural the axe after canceling five other series, including Telenovela and Undateable. The Mysteries of Laura premiered in 2014 and aired its Season 2 finale in March.

Debra Messing, who played the title character, Det. Laura Diamond, confirmed the news Saturday on Twitter. The series co-starred Josh Lucas as Laura's ex-husband, Cpt. Jake Broderick, and ended on a cliffhanger for their possible reconciliation.

"My dear Diamonds - our story has ended but it was a joyous story to tell. We are all so grateful to you for your love. #DiamondsForever," Messing wrote. "Let's say Jake called off the engagement and ran to Laura and they lived happily ever after. Ok?"

The Mysteries of Laura showrunner Jeff Rake revealed would-be Season 3 plot details to Deadline after the cancellation. The Season 3 premiere would have seen Jake's girlfriend, Jen (Jenna Fischer), return the ring and end their engagement.

With Jen gone, Jake is open to getting back together with Laura but first discloses the full details of his marriage-ending affair. He reveals he cheated on Laura with a prosecution witness in a homicide investigation they worked on in 2014.

Future episodes would recount the investigation in a series of flashbacks. Laura and Jake would eventually re-open the case in the present day after Laura discovers Jake's mistress lied in her prosecution testimony.

Messing is best known for playing Grace Adler on the NBC sitcom Will & Grace, which came to a close after eight seasons in 2006. The actress will next appear in ABC's Dirty Dancing remake starring Abigail Breslin as Baby.
