LOS ANGELES, May 7 (UPI) -- ABC has ordered Designated Survivor, a new conspiracy thriller series starring Kiefer Sutherland.

The show will feature Sutherland as Tom Kirkman, a low-level cabinet member who becomes President of the United States after a cataclysmic attack on Washington D.C. The cast will also include Natascha McElhone, Maggie Q and Kal Penn.

TVGuide.com reported the news Friday.

Fox recently announced it is bringing back Sutherland's iconic ticking-clock show 24 with a new lead -- Corey Hawkins.

Sutherland is an executive producer on the re-boot 24: Legacy, however it is unclear if he will appear on it now that he has the ABC series.
