"With enormous pride, we are announcing a second season of Underground, a series that has resonated with so many passionate fans across the country," Matt Cherniss, president and general manager of WGN America, said in a statement.

Underground has become WGN's most-watched original scripted series ever and has averaged 3 million total viewers when taking into account DVR returns.

Season 2, which will begin production this summer, will consist of 10 episodes and premiere in 2017.

Executive produced by musician John Legend along with creators Misha Green and Joe Pokaski, Underground stars Aldis Hodge, Jurnee Smollett-Bell, Jessica De Gouw, Alano Miller and Christopher Meloni. The show follows a group of American heroes as they escape from slavery and fight for freedom.

WGN has also recently renewed its second-newest original drama Outsiders for a second season.
