NEW YORK, March 22 (UPI) -- Jimmy Fallon and Chris Martin teamed up recently to perform a cover of David Bowie's "Life on Mars?" on The Tonight Show.

The performance which aired Monday, features the Coldplay frontman playing on a piano backstage before Fallon casually confronts him about what he's working on.

Suddenly, Martin then launches into the song with Fallon who does his best to impersonate Bowie's signature voice and vocals.

Roots guitarist Captain Kirk Douglas also joins in for the heartfelt cover for a quick guitar solo. Once "Life on Mars?" is finished, Fallon then again casually pats Martin on the back and exclaims "Well keep working on it."

Bowie died in January at the age of 69 following a yearlong battle with liver cancer. Fallon and Martin have paid tribute to the music icon before with the late night host sharing stories on The Tonight Show of how the two exchanged jokes over emails between each other.

"He was a great artist," Fallon said at the time. "One of a kind singer, songwriter, actor, fashion icon, mad genius who also had one of the greatest senses of humor of anyone I'd ever met. So, I'm just gonna email you, David Bowie, and if you could check your email in space or in heaven, or wherever you are. You don't have to email me back."

In February, Martin covered Bowie's song "Heroes" while taking part in Carpool Karaoke with James Corden.
