BURBANK, Calif., Feb. 25 (UPI) -- Despite Gwen Stefani's attempt to keep boyfriend Blake Shelton out of the conversation, Ellen DeGeneres coaxed her to speak about his "popping the big question."

The question, in fact, had nothing to do with marriage, but why Stefani said "yes" to being a mentor to Shelton's team on NBC's The Voice.

Stefani appeared on The Ellen DeGeneres Show Thursday to discuss her live music video, upcoming album -- This Is What The Truth Feels Like -- and return to The Voice after emptying her seat as coach for veteran Christina Aguilera.

"I thought it would be a good idea not to talk about Blake, to see what would happen," Stefani said in an attempt to thwart the daytime talk show host and friend from bringing up their surprise relationship.

"OK," DeGeneres said. "Let's just look at pictures then."

"When he popped the big question -- about you being his mentor -- how did he do that?" she asked after a brief exchange of quips.

After Stefani noticed DeGeneres rehearsed that line to work into the show, she went on to discuss her work on The Voice and why she wanted to stay. "It's just...I got so much out of it," the "Make Me Like You" singer said.

"You did," DeGeneres joked, alluding to her romance with the country star.

"This show is, like...I just come on and giggle and laugh," Stefani said. "It's so embarrassing."
