BURBANK, Calif., Feb. 1 (UPI) -- The cast of Archie Comics will come to life in a new series ordered to pilot by the CW titled Riverdale.

The live-action series was picked up for a pilot by the network recently along with six others, including a series featuring classic horror monsters Transylvania and a new untitled space drama taking place on Mars.

Labeled as a one-hour drama, Riverdale will be written by Archie Comics Chief Creative Officer Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa and executive produced by Greg Berlanti, who handles the network's string of successful DC Comics adaptations, Arrow, Flash and the recently premiered Legends of Tomorrow.

Riverdale will offer a "bold, subversive take on Archie, Betty, Veronica and their friends, exploring small-town life and the darkness and weirdness bubbling beneath Riverdale's wholesome facade," the official Archie website states.

"The show will focus on the eternal love triangle of Archie Andrews, girl-next-door Betty Cooper and rich socialite Veronica Lodge and will include the entire cast of characters from the comic books—including Archie's rival, Reggie Mantle, and his slacker best friend, Jughead Jones."

Other Archie Comics characters such as Archie's friend Kevin Keller, for whom Archie famously took a bullet in the comics in 2014, is also set to make an appearance on the show, as well as members of Josie and the Pussycats.
