"I'm very inspired by my mom," Gianna said in her introduction. "I would have to say she's my idol. So I just want to show her that all her hard work of teaching me is paying off and show her how proud I am to be her daughter."

Starr came to fame in the 1980s with such hits as "Pickin' Up Pieces," "I Still Believe" and "Sweet Surrender." She and Lopez attended the same dance studio in New York, and Mariah Carey served as her backup singer for some time.

"My daughter is the best thing that ever happened to me," the singer said of Gianna. "She's everything a mother could ever ask for. I'm so proud of her."

Gianna advanced to the Hollywood round, much to her and Starr's happiness. The 15th and final season of American Idol airs Wednesdays and Thursdays at 8 p.m. ET on Fox.
