LOS ANGELES, Dec. 23 (UPI) -- Director David Fincher and actress Charlize Theron are teaming up to bring true-crime drama Mind Hunter to Netflix.

The pair will be executive producing the project together with Fincher set to direct. The series is based on the 1996 book Mind Hunter: Inside the FBI's Elite Serial Crime Unit by John Douglas and Mark Olshanker.

The book recounts the profiling techniques Douglas used during his 25-year career tracking down serial killers and rapists for the FBI. The book also went behind the scenes of Douglas's most high-profile cases including the man who hunted prostitutes in Alaska, the Atlanta child murderer, and Seattle's Green River killer.

Theron and Fincher have been trying to get the series off the ground for years, first planning to release the show on HBO. Originally Dexter showrunner Scott Buck was hired to write the script until he landed another showrunner position for Netflix's upcoming Marvel's Iron Fist series. Screenwriter Joe Penhall is now taking over writing duties.

Mind Hunter will be the second Netflix series for Fincher who helped launch the steaming services popular political drama House of Cards.
