LOS ANGELES, Sept. 22 (UPI) -- Backstreet Boys singer Nick Carter had some trouble with his shoes Monday, as he slipped during his performance on Dancing with the Stars.

While doing the Jive with dance partner Sharna Burgess, Carter slipped and stumbled on stage while the camera's were rolling, causing the singer to throw off his glitter-encrusted shoes in frustration afterwards.

"I'm thinking I better pick it up somewhere or I'm going to look bad on television," Carter said when asked by co-host Erin Andrews what was going through his mind after the incident. "Honestly I was just having fun and you know those things happen and the show must go on."

"It was a little bit messy," Judge Julianna Hough said, "but still a great way to start the night," she added. Collectively the judges scored Carter and Burgess 21 out of 30.

Monday night's episode featured the stars traveling to their hometowns and choosing dances that best represent them. The pop star traveled back to Tampa, Fla., where he gave special recognition to one of his favorite teachers Sandy Karl. Carter showed his appreciation for how she helped him through school by dedicating his dance to her.

"At the end of the day, without her, I wouldn't have been a Backstreet Boy and I would not be in the entertainment business at all," Carter told People. "I've never had the opportunity to give her any recognition up to this point, and I had a successful and long career, so it is very satisfying and made it all worth it for me."

Dancing with the Stars also said goodbye to its first contestants as Chaka Khan and Keo Motsepe became the first couple eliminated from Season 21.
