LOS ANGELES, Sept. 18 (UPI) -- Grey's Anatomy released a season 12 trailer starring Ellen Pompeo on Thursday.

The preview sees the 45-year-old actress return as Dr. Meredith Grey, who is seen dealing with some major changes. Sister-in-law Amelia Shepherd (Caterina Scorsone) literally knocks down Meredith's walls, while half-sister Maggie Pierce (Kelly McCreary) is shown punching a blonde.

The season will see Meredith adjust to life after husband Derek Shepherd (Patrick Dempsey), who died on the season 11 finale. The couple married in season 7, and share young daughter Zola Shepherd.

"In order for a one-hour drama to continue, there has to be big upheavals," Pompeo told reporters in August. "You think, 'How can the show go on?' But that's exactly how the writers find inspiration. So the loss of the big characters is exactly how the show does go on."

Grey's Anatomy premiered in 2005, and will return Sept. 24 on ABC. The series follows the employees at the fictional Seattle Grace Hospital, and co-stars Justin Chambers as Alex Karev, Chandra Wilson as Miranda Bailey and James Pickens, Jr., as Richard Webber.
