LOS ANGELES, July 22 (UPI) -- Michael Chiklis is set to play Captain Nathaniel Barnes on season 2 of Fox's Gotham.

The DC Comics-inspired show follows a young Detective James Gordon (Ben McKenzie) in his fight against crime.

Capt. Barnes is described as "a law-and-order zealot" who teams up with Det. Gordon at the Gotham City Police Department. The character proves to be "a strong ally" to Gordon, but evolves into "an equally powerful enemy."

Gotham co-stars Donal Logue as Det. Harvey Bullock, Robin Lord Taylor as Oswald Cobblepot, aka Penguin, and David Mazouz as a pre-Batman Bruce Wayne. Showrunner Bruno Heller told fans at San Diego Comic-Con season 2 will focus on "the rise of the villains."

The series will return for a second season Sept. 21, albeit without Jada Pinkett Smith as Fish Mooney. Cameron Monaghan appeared as Jerome Valeska in one episode of season 1, and will portray the Joker in season 2.

Chiklis is known for playing Vic Mackey on FX police drama The Shield, and also portrayed Vincent Savino on CBS series Vegas. He recently appeared as Dell Toledo on American Horror Story: Freak Show, and will play Dr. Nelson Brackett on American Horror Story: Hotel.
