LOS ANGELES, May 14 (UPI) -- Harry Shearer, a longtime voice cast member of The Simpsons, implied on Twitter early Thursday he has been fired from the animated series.

Shearer has played the characters Mr. Burns, Ned Flanders, Reverend Lovejoy and Principal Skinner for more than two decades. Fox announced this month it had renewed the series for Seasons 27 and 28.

"from James L. Brooks' lawyer: "show will go on, Harry will not be part of it, wish him the best,"" Shearer tweeted, quoting an attorney for the series' producer.

"This because I wanted what we've always had: the freedom to do other work. Of course, I wish him the very best," a subsequent tweet from Shearer read. "Thanks, Simpsons fans, for your support."
